MIXING
Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare FERAHEME.
Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete the procedure from beginning to end.Â
You will need syringe, needle, solution to dilute medication with and alcohol to prepare medication.
Inspect vials for particulate material and discoloration prior to dilution.
Comes in single-dose vials (510 mg elemental iron in 17 ml.
Dilute full contents of vial (17 ml) in 50 ml to 200 ml of
0.9% NaCl or
5% dextrose
Allow 30 minutes between administration of FERAHEME and other medications that could cause serious hypersensitivity reactions and/or hypotension.
ADMINISTRATION
Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment.
Spike the bag of FERAHEME & prime line.
Administer with the patient in a reclined or semi-reclined position.
Infuse over a minimum of 15 minutes. Dial-a-flow tubing is most often used to infuse.Â
Monitor patient for any infusion reactions.
Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used.
Monitor patient during and for at least 30 minutes post infusion and until clinically stable.
Record vitals every 15 minutes, 5-10 minutes post infusion AND at end of monitoring time.
Disconnect patient, flush line, and remove IV.
Place pressure bandage at site.Â
Clean and dispose of used supplies.
