MIXING

THIS MAY BE A PATIENT TEACH

(Confirm with Care Coordinator if patient teach or RN is to administer)

  1. Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the ILUMYA

  2. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete injection.  You will need:

    • Prefilled syringe, alcohol, gauze or cotton ball, bandage, sharps container

  3. Remove ILUMYA from fridge 30 minutes prior to injection and inspect

    • ILUMYA is a clear to slightly opalescent, colorless to slightly yellow solution.

    • Do not use if the liquid contains visible particles or syringe is damaged

    • Air bubbles may be present; no need to remove them

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment

  2. Choose injection site

    • Abdomen, thighs, or upper arm

  3. Clean injection site with alcohol and allow to dry

  4. While holding body of syringe, pull the needle cover straight off (do not twist) and discard

  5. Inject ILUMYA subcutaneously at a 90-degree angle

    • Press down blue plunger until it can go no further. This activates the safety mechanism that will ensure full retraction of the needle after the injection is given.

    • Remove needle from the skin entirely before letting go of blue plunger. After blue plunger is released, safety lock will draw needle inside needle guard.

  6. Check injection site and gently hold pressure over skin with cotton ball or gauze until bleeding stopped

    • Do not rub injection site

    • Cover with bandage if needed

  7. Monitor patient for any adverse reactions

  8. Record vitals 5-10 minutes post infusion

  9. Record lot number and expiration date

  10. Clean and dispose of used supplies
