ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders
ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions
NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before
MIXING
NOTE: Administration of a test INFeD dose prior to the first therapeutic dose is required
Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the INFED
Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete infusion from beginning to end.
IM: medication, syringe and 19” or 20” gauge needle, alcohol, gauze, bandage
IV: medication, syringe and needle to draw up, infusion bag, tubing and pump, IV start supplies, alcohol
Mix according to package insert/label
ADMINISTRATION
Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment
Intramuscular
INFeD should be injected deeply, with a 2-inch or 3-inch 19- or 20-gauge needle
INFeD should be injected only into the muscle mass of the upper outer quadrant of the buttock – never into the arm or other exposed areas
If patient is standing, they should be bearing weight on the leg opposite the injection site, or if in bed, they should be in the lateral position with injection site uppermost
To avoid injection or leakage into subcutaneous tissue, a Z-track technique (displacement of the skin laterally prior to injection) is recommended.
Intravenous
INFeD is given undiluted at a slow gradual rate not to exceed 50 mg (1 mL) per minute
Monitor patient for any adverse reactions
Assess vital signs at baseline, every 15 minutes for the first hour, hourly and with each rate change, AND 5-10 minutes post infusion
Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used
IM
Place gauze and pressure at site and cover with bandage
IV
Disconnect patient, flush line, and remove IV
Place pressure bandage at site
Clean and dispose of used supplies
