ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the
Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete injection from beginning to end
- You will need: prefilled syringe, alcohol wipes, cotton ball or gauze pad, Band-Aid and Sharps container
Remove from fridge and let come to room temperature for 15 – 30 minutes
Remove syringe from container and hold in the middle
- Do not hold the wings
Inspect the liquid
- Liquid should be clear to slightly opalescent or colorless, slightly yellowish, slightly brownish
- Air bubbles are normal and do not attempt to remove

Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment
Clean injection site and allow to dry
Hold syringe in middle and pull cap straight off
- If there is a drop of liquid at the end that is normal
- Inject into upper arm, upper thigh or lower abdomen
- Avoid tender, bruised, red, scaly or hard skin and stretch marks
Inject at a 45-degree angle
- Do not press the plunger while inserting the needle
- Make sure that the plunger is fully depressed and that the plunger head is between the safety guard wings
When removing the needle slowly release plunger until safety guard covers needle
Do not rub the injection site, use a cotton ball or gauze to dab any blood and cover with Band-Aid if needed.
Monitor patient for any adverse reactions
Record vitals 5-10 minutes post infusion
Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used
Clean and dispose of used supplies
