ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

MIXING

  1. Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the Pyzchiva

  2. Pyzchiva comes in either prefilled syringe, autoinjector or vials.

  3. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete infusion from beginning to end.  You will need:  medication, syringe and needle if drawing from a vial, alcohol swabs, gauze and/or bandage

  4. Allow medication to reach room temperature for about 30 minutes after removing from the refrigerator

  5. If medication is in vials draw up the ordered medication into syringe

  6. Choose injection site: abdomen, buttocks, upper legs.  If a caregiver is giving the outer area of the arms may be used

  7. If dose is 90 mg, there may be one 90 mg dose or two 45 mg doses

    • If giving two 45 mg doses give second injection right after the first.  Choose different site for second injection

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment

  2. Clean the skin at injection site

  3. Vial

    • Pinch the skin and use dark like motion to insert needle in to pinched skin at a 45-degree angle

    • Push all the liquid slowly and evenly in

    • Remove needle when syringe is empty

  4. Autoinjector

    • Pull the needle cap straight off when ready to inject

    • Place the autoinjector straight on the skin at 90-degree angle and firmly push down onto the skin to start injection

    • There will be a first click when injection begins

    • Continue to press down onto the skin until the yellow indicator stops moving and there is a second click

    • Remove the empty autoinjector from the skin

    • Do not put needle cap back on as the yellow needle guard will completely cover the needle

  5. Prefilled Syringe

    • Hold the body of the prefilled syringe in one hand between the thumb and index fingers

    • Pinch the skin

    • Use a dart-like motion to insert the needle into the skin at about a 45-degree angle

    • Inject all liquid by pushing in the plunger until plunger head is completely between needle guard wings

    • Continuing to keep pressure on plunger head, remove the needle out of skin

    • Slowly remove thumb off plunger head and the empty syringe will move up until entire needle is covered by needle guard

  6. Monitor patient for any adverse reactions

  7. Record vital signs at baseline, AND 5-10 minutes post injection

  8. Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used

  9. Place gauze or bandage at site if needed.

  10. Clean and dispose of used supplies
