RITUXAN HYCELA (SC)

rituximab/hyaluronidase human

ALWAYS establish IV access prior to mixing any meds

ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

MIXING

NOTE: All patients must first receive at least one full dose of RITUXIMAB (IV) without experiencing severe adverse reactions before starting treatment with RITUXAN HYCELA due to the higher risk of hypersensitivity and other acute reactions during the first infusion

NOTE: During treatment with RITUXAN HYCELA, do not administer other medications for subcutaneous use at the same sites as RITUXAN HYCELA

  1. Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the

  2. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete infusion from beginning to end.  You will need:

    • Medication, 20 ml syringe, 25-30 gauge needle of any length, 25-30 gauge needle 1/2” – 5/8”

  3. Use a sterile needle and syringe to prepare RITUXAN HYCELA.

  4.  Using a sterile 20 mL syringe and a sterile 25-30 gauge needle of any length, withdraw the required volume from the vial

  5. Change the needle to a 1/2” to 5/8” long, narrow gauge needle (e.g., 25–30 gauge) immediately prior to subcutaneous administration to avoid needle clogging.

  6. Visually inspect for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration.

    • RITUXAN HYCELA should be a clear to opalescent and colorless to yellowish liquid. Do not use if particulates or discoloration is present

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment

  2. Inject RITUXAN HYCELA into subcutaneous tissue of abdomen over approximately 5–7 minutes

    • Never inject into areas where skin is red, bruised, tender or hard, or areas where there are moles or scars.

  3. Inject slowly:

    • Inject 11.7 mL of RITUXAN HYCELA 1,400 mg/23,400 Units vial (1,400 mg rituximab and 23,400 Units hyaluronidase human) subcutaneously into abdomen over approximately 5 minutes

    • Inject 13.4 mL of RITUXAN HYCELA 1,600 mg/26,800 Units vial (1,600 mg rituximab and 26,800 Units hyaluronidase human) subcutaneously into abdomen over approximately 7 minutes

  4. If administration of RITUXAN HYCELA is interrupted, continue administering at the same site, or at a different site, but restricted to the abdomen

  5. Monitor patient for any adverse reactions

  6. Record vital signs at baseline AND 5-10 minutes post infusion

  7. Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used

  8.  Observe patients for at least 15 minutes following RITUXAN HYCELA administration

  9. Place bandage or gauze at site if needed

  10. Clean and dispose of used supplies
