RUCONESST (IV)

C1 esterase inhibitor (recombinant)

**ALWAYS establish patent IV access and flush PRIOR to mixing medication**

ALWAYS establish IV access prior to mixing any meds

ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

MIXING

  1. Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare the RUCONEST

  2. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete infusion from beginning to end

  3. You will need sterile water, alcohol, syringe, needle to draw up and 23-gauge butterfly

  4. Reconstitute each vial (2100 U) by adding 14 mL sterile Water for Injection per vial to obtain a solution of 150 U per mL

  5. The reconstituted solution should be colorless, clear and free from visible particles

ADMINISTRATION


  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment

  2. Administer the reconstituted solution at room temperature as a slow intravenous injection over approximately 5 minutes

    • May administer through a butterfly or a PIV

  3. Appropriately trained patients may self-administer upon recognition of an HAE attack

  4. Record vitals prior to infusion and 5-10 minutes post infusion

  5. Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used

  6. Disconnect patient, flush line, and remove IV. Place pressure bandage at site

  7. Clean and dispose of used supplies
