ALWAYS establish IV access prior to mixing any meds

ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

MIXING

  1. Obtain a clear/clean space to prepare Rystiggo

  2. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete the procedure from beginning to end.

    • You will need sterile syringe(s), sterile transfer needle(s), alcohol wipes, infusion set, transparent tape or dressing, infusion pump, sharps container

  3. Rystiggo should be colorless to pale brownish-yellow, clear to slightly opalescent.  Bring to room temperature (appox 30 minutes)

  4. Prepare the infusion pump and infusion set.

    • Infusion pump settings:

      • Minimum volume: 3 ml

      • Flow rate: Max 20 ml/hour

  5.  Transfer Rystiggo to syringe.

    • Withdraw full contents of vial using sterile transfer needle (some residual volume may remain – discard it).

    • Repeat for additional vials if needed, using new sterile transfer needles

    • Remove needle, attach infusion set to syringe

    • (Infuse Rystiggo within 4 hours of vial puncture)

 

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment.

  2. Choose a site in lower left or right abdomen, below the navel.

    • Avoid

      • Tender, bruised, red or hard skin

      • Tattoos, scars, stretch marks

    • Rotate sites between infusions

  3. Clean site with alcohol, let dry

  4. Pinch skin with two fingers, insert infusion needle into subcutaneous tissue with dart-like motion.

  5. Secure needle using sterile gauze and tape or transparent dressing.

  6. Begin infusion at constant flow rate up to 20 ml/hour

  7. Assess vital signs 15 minutes after infusion start, every 15 minutes AND 5-10 minutes post infusion.

  8. Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used.
