ZOMETA (IV)

Zoledronic Acid

**ALWAYS establish patent IV access and flush PRIOR to mixing medication**

ALWAYS establish IV access prior to mixing any meds

ALWAYS make sure you have everything you need to complete infusion before you begin

ALWAYS confirm your medication dose against the medication label and orders

ALWAYS reach out to us first (not the Pharmacy) with any questions

NEVER tell a Pt you have not given a particular medication before

MIXING


  1. Obtain a clean space to prepare ZOMETA

  2. Be sure all the necessary supplies are available to complete infusion from beginning to end

    • You will need IV start supplies, alcohol, gravity flow tubing, and syringe

  3. Withdraw ZOMETA from vials and add to 100 ml of 0.9% Sodium Chloride or 5% Dextrose Injection

  4. Spike the bag and prime the tubing


ADMINISTRATION

  1. Take baseline vitals and document basic assessment

  2. Administer any ordered pre-medications

  3. Spike the bag and prime the line

  4. Infuse over no less than 15 minutes

  5. Record vitals every 15 minutes after infusion start AND 5-10 minutes post infusion

  6. Record lot numbers and expiration dates for vials used

  7. Flush IV line with 10 ml of normal saline

  8. Disconnect patient, flush line and remove IV

    • Place pressure bandage at site

  9. Clean and dispose of used supplies
