Topics to Discuss

  1. Importance of Hand Hygiene when handling PICC

  2. Always Scrub the Hub prior to attaching anything to the line (15 second scrub and allow to dry). If the Pt has been provided with the alcohol impregnated caps that attach to the end cap/microclave, please be sure to tell them that these are single use. You cannot continuously reuse the same cap. Keep in mind that they are not required and not all Pharmacies provide them. Never tell a patient that they need these but teach that they are an additional measure taken in some inpatient facilities.

  3. Prior to flushing, always expel air out of syringes (saline and heparin flushes) before attaching to the line

  4. Check for blood return and then proceed to flush line per orders. If the Pt does not get blood return or has any other issue with the line, advise them to call HHC.

  5. Instruct Pt to follow the SASH method. Saline, Administer Medication, Saline, Heparin.

  6. If the Pt has issues with supplies or medication itself, please instruct them to reach out to their Pharmacy. As all supplies and medications are shipped from the Pharmacy directly to the Pt.

  7. If you have any issues during a visit with a Pt, please contact HHC first with questions and we will assist you. Anytime you are seeing a Pt and they have abnormal vitals signs or any concerning symptoms, please be sure to notify us immediately via WhatsApp as well as documenting it in your notes.
